POSITIVE NEWS LESSON PLAN

We advocate self-organised learning. Therefore, we do not present you a formal, fixed procedure. The following ideas provide orientation on applying PNYV according to their class and frameworks.

* Discuss the media in general:

Which media do you consume? What do you like or dislike about news and reports? Do you trust the media, do you believe what you read in newspapers and see on tv? To what degree? Is your worldview coined by what you see, hear and read in public media? How balanced is the reporting about different important issues, and less important issues in the media? Has your worldview shifted over the past five years through media reports? If yes, give examples.

* Discuss individual priorities in life and the world:

What is most important for you in your life? What are your greatest wishes for the planet? Earth is our home. How important to you are the integrity of our planet’s biosphere, life systems and the diversity of life? What is most important for the society you live in? Is the state of the world going to effect your life, the lives of your family, friends and children? What would you like to change?

* Discuss the role of a society’s (=your) mass media for attaining your priorities in life:

Are media the biggest communication tool of a society? Should this communication tool be used for sharing important information, knowledge and know-how between citizens? Having in mind what is most important for you in your life, for the society you live in, for the world… do the conventional media live up to the role and function as the biggest communication tool between citizens? Where yes, where not? Why not?

* Discuss and envision the media culture supporting the creation and safeguarding of a Global, Peaceful, Just and Sustainable Civilisation:

What is your vision of a media culture and media examples that support achieving what you consider most important for your life, for the society you live in and for the world? Discuss and research potential media of today that live up to this quality.

* Discuss action:

Would you like to be part of the solution? Would you like to join such media networks and create such media in your community? How can you approach this undertaking?

* Take action:

Explore your local community and region for positive news, create a Local Edition. It is not difficult to detect positive projects and actors, all the precious things, events, institutions, projects and people that make life in your city a better place than without them.

PNYV offers participation in the creation of its various Editions. A Treasure Mapping Adventure is a playful way for mapping local positive actors and gathering content for producing a Local Edition. PNYV offers a professional working environment and free online tools for launching Local Editions in online and print format. Radio and TV programs are possible, also!
