TREASURE MAPPING EXPEDITION

The Treasure Mapping Adventure is a great class or group activity for playfully exploring and getting to know the many different positive actors in one's local community.

It widens perception and knowledge of one’s home space. It enhances awareness of the broad interest, longing and engagement for positive change. It triggers knowledge transfer. It connects multiple sources and partners facilitating action. It nurtures community-building and stimulates collaboration.

It generates media presence and creates a playful, creative public sphere for civil participation, both interdisciplinary and intergenerational. And it is the foundation for further outstanding change instruments, such as Local Editions, Radio & Tv programs! With children and young people in the driver’s seat!

What is a Treasure Map?

A Treasure Map includes – from the perspective of sustainability - all the treasures that enrich life in one's home city and are a part of a global, peaceful, just and sustainable civilisation. Examples are the city’ environmental office, youth parliaments, organic farms, youth clubs, kindergarden recycling projects, businesses using solar power, beautiful river banks, nice public places, creative art and culture centres, adventure playgrounds, the city's, research centres on global peace and stability, community-gardens and so on.

Benefits:

All these “treasures“ and “sustainability stakeholders“ have a vital role in the well-being and future of their city and the world. Yet, they are often invisible, even to each other! Making them visible has a striking effect: there are a lot of people who care! And there are many opportunities for participation and cooperation, for amplifying positive change! Raising awareness of positive actors in the community, and making them better accessible to citizens, enhances opportunities for all people interested in contributing to positive progress.

The project's results, or product, the city's “Treasure Map depicting Seeds of a Positive Future“ has much relevance to society and can be shared and continuously developed in cooperation with or by other classes, schools, youth groups, organisations and public administration. The Mapping project makes young people meet a lot of the decision makers, movers and cultural creatives of their city. The project can easily trigger media attention.

An instrument for positive change & Many very special opportunities:

This project does not stand alone but is part of a bundle of exceptional projects complementing and amplifying each other. Results are to be published in PNYV and thus help introduce and promote PNYV on local level, thus support the dissemination of treasures and know-how from all over the world on local level! Naturally, the project descriptions, photographs and interviews provide a treasure-box of content for a Local Edition! Which is the first step towards creating a new, long-term public communication sphere and media culture for positive co-creativity and collaboration...

These project activities can be easily interlinked:

PNYV in School, PNYV Lesson Plan, Treasure Mapping Adventure, PNYV Local Edition, Radio & TV Programs, Earth Day Celebration as an anchor point of sustainability learning and community-building across schools.

Activities:

The Treasure Mapping Adventure provides a lot of unique opportunities. Naturally, the project involves researching and visiting positive projects (Ecology, Culture, Economy, Social & Education) and meeting positive actors of all sorts (institutions, youth groups, mayors, organisations, schools, sustainability related businesses), joining or organising cultural events, holding press meetings, connecting to thematically related events, organising exhibitions, inviting for round table dialogues and discussions, documenting activities in form of articles, images, audio and video recordings...

A Success Story:

Positive Nett-Works Association organised a six-week-long Treasure Mapping Adventure along waterways in 2002. The "Quest for a Positive Future" was realised on occasion of the World Summit for Sustainability in Johannesburg 2002 under the patronage of Juergen Trittin, Germany’s Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety of Germany.

Flocks of volunteers, youth groups, schools and a multitude of organisations responded enthusiastically. A colourful chain of events helped communicate sustainability with "living faces, voices and hands for action" into national and regional radio programs, regional television programs, and made large headlines and articles in regional newspapers. A young media team produced a 30 minute documentary.

Our adventure benefited from the super-regional character, the integration of the artistic and playful character of the Future-raft as a Swimming Class-room and Travelling Round Table. It is not necessary to make the Expedition a success, but an additional, colourful frame or backdrop enhances fun and media attraction! You can also link the Expedition to a particular event, such as a festival or summit related to positive spirit, children, future, planet,  sustainability, participation, arts, cultures. You will find your right occasion!

Getting started:

The Treasure Mapping Expedition and the bouquet of accompanying projects can be successfully reproduced by any group of children or youth enjoying the spirit of positive change! Today, PNYV amplifies the inter/national dimension and allows for easy long-term development of the project for a hands-on, long-term Quest for Creating a Global, Peaceful, Just and Sustainable Civilisation.

We warmly recommend that you implement this unique project, and closely communicate with us. This way, we can play it to the fullest, together, publish and share the results and experience with a greater audience worldwide!
